The MVI69L-MBS sits in the 1769 I/O rack right next to the CPU and bridges that gap—translating between the Logix tag database and Modbus serial commands. This is the “L” version—the single-port variant. There’s also an MVI69E-MBS with two ports, but honestly, for most pump skids and panel retrofits, one port is enough. You configure it as a master polling up to 247 slaves, or as a slave letting a DCS poll it. The module shows up in RSLogix 5000 as a generic 1769 module. Map the data, write the ladder logic, and you’re talking Modbus. It doesn’t share the CompactLogix CPU’s version. Recommended Firmware: Version 3.14 or later. Earlier versions (3.10–3.13) had a timing quirk when acting as a Modbus master—if a slave didn’t respond within the timeout window, the module would lock that slave in “retry” mode and stop polling others until a power cycle. v3.14 added a configurable retry limit and fail counter. Compatibility: Works with CompactLogix firmware versions 16 through 35. If you’re running a newer v36 system, verify with ProSoft—there was a change in the 1769 backplane handshake that required a module firmware update (v3.20 ). Configuration Software: Use ProSoft Configuration Builder (PCB) v9.0 or higher. You’ll also need RSLogix 5000 or Studio 5000 to create the module in the I/O tree. The ProSoft provided Add-On Instruction (AOI) simplifies ladder logic—use it. Upgrade Process: You can update firmware over the backplane from the CompactLogix CPU. Download the .dnt file from ProSoft, use the ControlFLASH utility (with the ProSoft personality file installed), and flash it. Takes about two minutes.
